I assumed 1 is metaphorical for 5, which is the literal meaning. And the etymology seems to talk about stew.

And I was unaware of the petal meaning. None of those definitions are labeled British or US, but I wonder if there's a difference anyways.

The petal meaning is used in several episodes of Friends, which is American.
