Little curious about the icons next to the topics, specifically the little flame outside the circle. I recall the flame inside it means a "hot topic" by whatever standards the forum has, but this other is new to me.

When you choose to create a thread - or even a post - there is an option to give it a post icon, above where you choose the subject. That's where that flame came from. I think it was an option on the old xkcd forum but I'm not certain.

Googling the error, it sounds like NearlyFreeSpeech just updated to a new version of PHP and now I need to update the board to support it.

I wanted to post an image, but it says "sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached". Do I have to cull old attachments if I want to upload new stuff?

That means I have to raise the attachment quota. phpBB is really old so it defaults to 50 MB for the entire board.
