Title text: So what do we do when we get to base 10? Do we use A, B, C, etc? No: Numbers larger than about 3.6 million are simply illegal.
OK, so looking at the Wikipedia article I think I understand the system, but does anyone know of a use case?

I have that system here, under "Mixed-base systems". You can convert between that and decimal (and everything else).
