Title text: Also, they're getting increasingly worried that someone will accidentally hit the 'retract' button, and that the end of the cable thrashing around as it winds up could devastate the Earth's surface.

I once read an old story about travelling to the moon, written after the invention of the telegraph but before the invention of radio, where the two astronauts' spacesuits were connected by a wire so that they could talk to each other.
