I don't know why, but I get the feel linguistics has become a trendy field. In part NLP driven, but I think not entirely.

If you find the human brain and human culture interesting, it's a nice system to investigate.

The best grammars in linguistics leave much to be desired because their formal properties are underspecified, but the moment you try to solve it by devising formal properties the worse it gets.
